Mary (Anxiety)
Internal Struggle
Anxiety
Mary was asked to carry an impossible assignment with no precedent, no support structure, and no way to explain herself to the people closest to her. Everything she faced required trust she had no prior experience to build on.
What Happened?
Mary was a young woman engaged to a man named Joseph when an angel appeared to her and told her she would conceive a child by the Holy Spirit and give birth to the Son of God. She asked how that was possible, was told to trust, and said yes. She became pregnant before her marriage, which in her culture could have resulted in public shame or worse. Joseph initially planned to break off the engagement quietly until an angel also appeared to him. Mary gave birth in a stable, raised Jesus, watched him launch a public ministry that divided opinion everywhere he went, and stood at the foot of the cross when he was crucified (Luke 1-2; John 19).
How Did Anxiety Affect Mary?
- Mary was troubled when the angel first appeared and had to be told not to be afraid before she could hear what was being said (Luke 1:29-30)
- She carried a secret that could not be fully explained to the people in her life who would have the most questions
- She treasured difficult and confusing things in her heart rather than having a clear place to process them (Luke 2:19)
- When Jesus was twelve and stayed behind at the temple without telling his parents, Mary’s response revealed the weight she carried as his mother (Luke 2:48)
- She watched her son be publicly rejected, mocked, and executed, with no power to stop any of it
- She had to hold the tension of knowing who he was while experiencing everything a grieving mother experiences
The Turning Point
Mary’s turning point came before the assignment even began. When the angel told her what was going to happen, she didn’t pretend to understand it. She asked one honest question and then said, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be done to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38). That response set the trajectory of everything that followed. She didn’t have clarity about what the road ahead would look like. She had a decision about who she was going to trust with it, and she made it before she could see any of the outcome.
The Pattern That Led to Healing
- Heard something that made no human sense and felt the full weight of it
- Asked one honest question instead of shutting down or running
- Made a decision to trust before she had any evidence of how it would work out
- Held confusion and faith at the same time without letting one cancel the other
- Stayed present through every difficult stage without abandoning her role
- Was present at the resurrection and remained part of the early church community afterward
Practical Steps for Facing Anxiety
- Ask the honest question you are actually afraid to ask instead of circling around it
- Make the decision that is in front of you now rather than trying to solve every unknown at once
- Accept that you can trust someone without fully understanding the plan
- Find one or two people you can actually talk to rather than carrying everything alone
- Practice identifying what is actually in your control versus what is not, and direct your energy accordingly
- Let yourself feel the difficulty of what you are carrying without using that feeling as a reason to quit
- Look for evidence from the past that things you couldn’t see working out eventually did
