I Am Courageous (Joshua 1:9)

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

What It Means to Be Courageous

Being courageous means choosing to move forward with faith even when fear is present. It is the ability to do what is right, necessary, or God-led without letting fear make the final decision.

Courage does not mean you never feel nervous, uncertain, or overwhelmed. It means you trust God’s presence more than you trust the size of the problem in front of you. A courageous person can feel fear and still obey, speak, act, lead, forgive, try again, or take the next step.

Hebrew Meaning

chazaq (חָזַק): to be strong, firm, strengthened, or made secure; used when someone is called to hold steady and not collapse under pressure. It carries the idea that courage is not only emotional bravery, but strength received and practiced.

amats (אָמַץ): to be courageous, bold, alert, firm, or determined; used when God’s people are called to move forward without giving fear the final word. It carries the idea of inner resolve, the kind of courage that chooses obedience even when the situation feels intimidating.

Greek Meaning

tharseō (θαρσέω): to take courage, be of good cheer, or be confident; used when Jesus or His messengers tell people not to lose heart. It is not shallow positivity, it is courage rooted in the presence, authority, and victory of God.

Bible Verses on Courage

Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV): “Be strong (chazaq) and courageous (amats). Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua 1:9 (NIV): “Have I not commanded you? Be strong (chazaq) and courageous (amats). Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 31:24 (NIV): “Be strong (chazaq) and take heart (amats), all you who hope in the LORD.”

Matthew 14:27 (NIV): “But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage (tharseō)! It is I. Don’t be afraid.'”

John 16:33 (NIV): “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart (tharseō)! I have overcome the world.”

Acts 23:11 (NIV): “The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, ‘Take courage (tharseō)! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.'”

How to Practice Courage

Name What You Are Afraid Of. Fear often feels bigger when it stays vague. Be honest about what is intimidating you so you can bring it before God clearly.

Take the Next Right Step. Courage usually grows through obedience, not overthinking. Focus on the step in front of you instead of trying to solve the whole future at once.

Remember Who Is With You. God did not tell Joshua to be courageous because Joshua was strong by himself. He told him to be courageous because God promised to be with him.

Do Not Let Fear Lead Your Decisions. Fear can inform you, but it should not control you. Ask yourself, “Am I choosing this because it is wise, or because I am afraid?”

Practice Courage in Small Moments. Speak honestly, apologize first, try again, set a boundary, ask for help, or show up when it would be easier to hide.

Declare It

I move forward even when I am afraid, because God’s presence is greater than any obstacle in front of me.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for giving me courage through Your presence. Help me to be strong and courageous, even when I feel uncertain or afraid. Teach me to move forward in faith instead of shrinking back in fear. Remind me that I am not alone, and that You are with me wherever I go. Give me the strength to obey, speak, act, and trust You one step at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question

Where has fear been making decisions for me, and what would it look like to trust God enough to take the next faithful step?
