I Am an Heir (Romans 8:17)
“Now if we are children, then we are heirs, heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

What It Means to Be an Heir
An heir is not someone who has earned an inheritance. An heir is someone who receives one because of who they belong to. In ancient culture, inheritance was about lineage and relationship, not merit. Paul’s declaration in Romans 8 is staggering: because you are a child of God, you are also an heir of God, and a co-heir with Christ. What belongs to Jesus belongs to you in Him.
This identity reshapes how you approach life. An heir does not live in scarcity or beg for what is already theirs. An heir walks with the confidence that their Father’s resources, authority, and promises are available to them. That does not mean the Christian life is free from hardship. Romans 8:17 itself mentions sharing in suffering. But it also means suffering is not the end of the story. Glory follows, and it belongs to you as a full heir of God.
Hebrew Meaning
yarash (יָרַשׁ): to inherit, to possess, to take possession of; used throughout the Old Testament to describe God’s people receiving the land and the promises He had set apart for them. Inheritance in the Hebrew context was not just about material possession. It was about covenant relationship and the fulfillment of God’s promised purposes.
Greek Meaning
klēronomos (κληρονόμος): heir, one who receives a share; used in Romans 8:17 alongside synklēronomos, which means co-heir or joint heir. This is a legal term that speaks of full right to an inheritance. Paul uses it to communicate that believers are not junior partners or distant relatives. They are full heirs, standing in the same inheritance as Christ Himself through union with Him.

Galatians 3:29 (NIV): “If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs (klēronomos) according to the promise.”

How to Practice Being an Heir
Reject the Orphan Mindset. An orphan scrapes and strives because they believe no one is providing for them. An heir rests in the provision of their Father. Identify where you are still living in scarcity and bring those places to God.
Pray With the Confidence of an Heir. You are not begging when you pray. You are a child approaching a Father who has already given you everything in Christ. Let that truth shape the posture and boldness of your prayers.
Walk in the Authority You Have Been Given. Heirs do not just receive resources; they carry responsibility and authority. Bring your gifts, your influence, and your voice into the world with the confidence of someone who belongs to a powerful Father.
Hold Suffering in Light of the Inheritance. Romans 8:17 does not promise a suffering-free life. But it does promise that suffering is temporary and that glory is coming. When hard seasons arrive, anchor yourself in what is ahead.
Steward What You Have Been Given. An inheritance is not meant to be hoarded. Use what God has entrusted to you, your time, talents, resources, and access, in ways that advance His kingdom and serve others.
Declare It
I am not just a servant of God but a full heir to everything He has promised.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for making me not just Your servant but Your child and Your heir. Help me to stop living like an orphan and start living from the fullness of who I am in Christ. Where I have been striving, give me rest. Where I have been afraid, give me confidence. Teach me to walk in the inheritance You have already secured for me through Jesus. In His name, Amen.
