The Power of Self-Control to Protect Every Boundary

Proverbs 25:28

“Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.”

Authority

Self-control is the spiritual wall that protects every area of your life. When self-control is present, the enemy cannot find a gap in your defenses through impulsive behavior, unguarded reactions, or undisciplined choices. A believer with self-control has intact walls, and intact walls keep the enemy out.

The Enemy’s Strategy

The enemy looks for the gaps. He identifies the areas where self-control is weakest and works to exploit them. An impulsive decision, an unguarded reaction, a repeated undisciplined choice in a specific area can give the enemy the access he has been looking for. He does not always attack the front wall. He looks for the broken section.

The Biblical Example

The Proverb uses a city without walls as the picture of a person without self-control. In the ancient world, city walls were not decorative. They were the difference between safety and exposure. A city with broken walls was a city waiting to be taken. The writer is using that image to describe what a lack of self-control does to a person’s life. Every area where self-control has broken down is an area that is no longer protected.

How to Use It

Identify the areas where self-control has been inconsistent and treat them as walls that need to be rebuilt. Ask God for the grace to choose self-control in the specific situations where you have repeatedly struggled. Walk in self-control as a deliberate act of spiritual warfare, knowing that each disciplined choice is a section of wall going back up.

Declaration

“I walk in self-control and my walls are intact. Every area of my life where the enemy has been looking for a gap is being strengthened by the self-control that God produces in me. I choose self-control today and with every choice I make, the walls get stronger and the enemy’s access gets smaller. I am not a city without walls. I am protected.”
