The Power of Fasting to Break What Prayer Alone Has Not

Matthew 6:17-18

“But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Authority

Fasting done before God in secret carries spiritual authority that the Father directly responds to with reward. It is not a religious performance for an audience. It is a private transaction between you and God that He sees and rewards. Combined with prayer, fasting reaches into situations that have not yet moved and brings the weight of that secret sacrifice to bear on them.

The Enemy’s Strategy

The enemy trivializes fasting and makes it feel like an unnecessary religious exercise with no connection to real spiritual outcomes. He knows that certain strongholds and certain battles require a level of spiritual intensity that fasting and prayer together produce. When a believer eliminates fasting from their spiritual practice entirely, they remove one of the tools specifically calibrated for what regular prayer has not yet broken through.

The Biblical Example

Jesus taught fasting in the Sermon on the Mount not as an option but as a practice He assumed His followers would do. He said “when you fast,” not “if.” His instruction was about how to fast, not whether. The reward He promised was from the Father who sees in secret. This was the same structure He used for giving and prayer in the same passage: the Father who sees the secret act responds openly. The principle is consistent. God responds to what is done for Him privately without an audience.

How to Use It

When a situation has not moved despite consistent prayer, consider adding fasting. Fast before God during the fast. Trust that the Father who sees in secret rewards openly, and that the combination of prayer and fasting carries the power to move what has not moved.
