I Am a Child of God (John 1:12)
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
John 1:12 (NIV)
What It Means to Be a Child of God
Being a child of God means you belong to Him through faith, love, and relationship. It means your identity is not built on rejection, performance, or people’s approval, but on being received by God.
God does not treat His children like strangers trying to earn a place in His house. He calls you into belonging, care, correction, inheritance, and closeness. A child of God learns to live from relationship, not distance.
Hebrew Meaning
ben / banim (בֵּן / בָּנִים): son / sons or children; used to describe family identity, belonging, inheritance, and relationship. It carries the idea that God’s people are not merely servants of a distant ruler, but children connected to Him by covenant love.

Greek Meaning
teknon / tekna (τέκνον / τέκνα): child / children; used to describe those who belong to God through new birth and faith. It carries the idea of relationship, dependence, and identity received from the Father.

How to Practice Being a Child of God
Stop Living Like an Outsider. You do not have to approach God as if you are unwanted or barely tolerated. Come to Him as someone who belongs.
Receive Correction as Love. God’s correction is not rejection. It is the care of a Father who wants to mature and protect His children.
Let Belonging Heal Rejection. People may leave, misunderstand, or overlook you, but their response does not cancel your place in God’s family.
Live With Family Responsibility. Being God’s child shapes how you represent Him. Let your words, choices, and relationships reflect your Father’s character.
Talk to God Personally. Prayer is not only formal language. Bring Him your needs, fears, questions, gratitude, and daily life.
Declare It
I come to God as someone who belongs, not as a stranger who has to earn a place in His house.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for making me Your child through faith. Help me stop living like an outsider and teach me to rest in the truth that I belong to You. Heal the places where rejection has shaped how I see myself. Teach me to receive Your love, correction, and care as my Father. Let my life reflect the identity and responsibility of being part of Your family. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Question
Where am I still living like I have to earn a place with God, and how would my prayers, choices, and self-worth change if I truly believed I am His child?
