I Am Known (Psalm 139:1)

“You have searched me, LORD, and you know me.”

Psalm 139:1 (NIV)

What It Means to Be Known

Being known means God sees every part of you and still chooses to be present with you. It means you are not hidden, misunderstood, or overlooked by the One who matters most.

Many people live with a deep fear that if anyone truly saw them, they would be rejected. But God does not see you partially. He knows your thoughts, your history, your patterns, your wounds, and your potential, and His response is not to pull away. A person who is truly known by God can stop performing and start living from the truth that they are fully seen and fully held.

Hebrew Meaning

yada (יָדַע): to know, perceive, understand, or be acquainted with; used to describe intimate, personal knowledge. It is not distant or academic knowledge, but the kind of knowing that comes from close relationship and full attention.

Greek Meaning

ginōskō (γινώσκω): to know, recognize, or understand through experience and relationship; used to describe the personal knowledge God has of His people. It points to knowing that is relational, not merely informational.

epignōsis (ἐπίγνωσις): full or complete knowledge; used to describe deep, thorough understanding. It reminds us that God’s knowledge of us is not surface-level but complete and certain.

Bible Verses on Being Known

Psalm 139:1–4 (NIV): “You have searched me, LORD, and you know (yada) me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.”

Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV): “Before I formed you in the womb I knew (yada) you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Isaiah 43:1 (NIV): “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”

John 10:14 (NIV): “I am the good shepherd; I know (ginōskō) my sheep and my sheep know me.”

1 Corinthians 13:12 (NIV): “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; but then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully (epignōsis), even as I am fully known.”

Galatians 4:9 (NIV): “But now that you know God, or rather are known (ginōskō) by God; how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces?”

How to Practice Being Known

Stop Hiding From God. You cannot conceal yourself from Him, and trying to do so only increases the distance you feel. Come honestly, even when it is uncomfortable.

Let Being Known Replace the Fear of Exposure. What you are most afraid for people to see, God already knows. His response is love, not rejection.

Resist the Need to Perform. You do not have to present a cleaned-up version of yourself to God or to safe people. Being known requires honesty, not perfection.

Receive God’s Knowledge as Care. God knowing you completely is not a threat. It means He can meet you exactly where you are with exactly what you need.

Let His Knowledge Shape Your Identity. You are not defined by the parts of yourself you are ashamed of. You are defined by the One who knows all of it and calls you His own.

Declare It

Before I speak a word, God already knows everything about me, and His response is not rejection but love.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for knowing me completely and still choosing to be present with me. Help me stop hiding the parts of myself I am ashamed of and teach me to come to You honestly. Let the truth that I am fully known and fully loved replace every fear of exposure or rejection. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question

What part of myself am I most afraid for God to see, and what would change if I truly believed His full knowledge of me leads to love and not rejection?
