I Am Seated with Christ (Ephesians 2:6)

What It Means to Be Seated with Christ
Being seated with Christ means your spiritual position is not beneath your circumstances. It is above them. It means God has already placed you in a position of authority, rest, and access in Christ.
In the ancient world, being seated was a position of honor, authority, and completion. A person who was seated had finished their work and taken their rightful place. When Paul says believers are seated with Christ in heavenly places, he is saying your position before God is not in jeopardy, not on a waiting list, and not dependent on your performance. You are placed there in Christ. A seated person does not live in anxiety about whether they belong. They live from the security of where they already are.
Hebrew Meaning
yashav (יָשַׁב): to sit, dwell, or remain; used to describe settled presence, rest, and established position. It carries the idea of someone who has taken their place and is not being moved.
Greek Meaning
synkathizō (συγκαθίζω): to sit together with or seat together; used in Ephesians 2:6 to describe believers being co-seated with Christ. It is a compound word combining “together with” and “to sit,” pointing to shared position and shared authority.
epouranios (ἐπουράνιος): heavenly or in the heavenly realms; used to describe the spiritual dimension where believers’ true position in Christ exists. It points to a reality that is already established, even if not yet fully visible.
Bible Verses on Being Seated with Christ
Psalm 110:1 (NIV): “The LORD says to my lord: ‘Sit (yashav) at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'”
Ephesians 1:20–21 (NIV): “He raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion.”

How to Practice Being Seated with Christ
Think From Your Position, Not Toward It. You are not trying to climb to a place of favor with God. You are already placed there in Christ. Let that truth shape how you pray, decide, and face difficulty.
Stop Living Beneath Your Spiritual Authority. You have been given access, authority, and identity in Christ. Living in fear, shame, or passivity does not match where you are actually seated.
Set Your Mind Where You Are Seated. Colossians 3 tells us to set our minds on things above. Your thoughts should follow your position. Practice bringing your mind back to what is true about where you stand in Christ.
Rest Is a Position, Not Just a Feeling. Seated means the work is done, Christ’s work, not yours. Rest in what He has already accomplished instead of striving as though your standing is still uncertain.
Let Your Position Shape Your Confidence. When you face opposition, remember where you are seated. You do not face battles from the bottom. You face them from above, in Christ.
Declare It
I am not beneath my circumstances; God has raised me up and seated me with Christ, and I live from that position today.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for raising me up with Christ and seating me in a place of belonging and authority. Help me stop living beneath where You have already placed me. Teach me to think from my position in Christ, not toward it. Let the security of being seated with You replace the anxiety of trying to earn my place. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
