I Am Sought After (Isaiah 62:12)
“They will be called the Holy People, the Redeemed of the LORD; and you will be called Sought After, the City No Longer Deserted.”

What It Means to Be Sought After
Isaiah 62 is a declaration over a people who had come to believe they were forgotten, abandoned, and no longer desirable to God. Into that shame, God speaks a new name: Sought After. The city that was deserted is now the city being actively pursued. The people who felt discarded are now the ones God is coming after. This is not a future hope only. It is a present identity.
To be sought after by God means you are not the one who has to initiate the pursuit. You are not the one scrambling to get His attention or prove your worth. God is the one who seeks. The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine and goes after the one that is lost. The father runs toward the returning son while he is still a long way off. The God of the universe has set His pursuit on you specifically, by name, and that pursuit does not stop. A person who truly receives this truth stops living as though they are unwanted and starts living as someone who is actively and continually sought.
Hebrew Meaning
darash (דָּרַשׁ): to seek, to inquire, to pursue, to require; used throughout the Old Testament to describe earnest seeking and intentional pursuit. When God darash seeks His people, it is not a casual glance. It is an active, determined, wholehearted pursuit. The same word is used when God calls His people to seek Him with all their heart. The seeking goes both ways, and it is God who initiates.
Greek Meaning
zēteō (ζητέω): to seek, to search for, to desire earnestly; used throughout the Gospels to describe how God searches for what is lost. In Luke 15, the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son are all the objects of active seeking. Jesus describes the Father’s posture toward the wandering as one of urgent, joyful pursuit. You are not an afterthought to God. You are what He is looking for.

Luke 15:4-5 (NIV): “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders.”
Ezekiel 34:11 (NIV): “For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search (darash) for my sheep and look after them.”

How to Practice Being Sought After
Let God’s Pursuit Reframe Your Sense of Worth. You are not seeking to earn God’s attention. He is already seeking you. Let that reframe how you see yourself. When you feel unimportant or invisible, return to the truth that the God of the universe has put His pursuit on you.
Stop Running From the One Who Is Looking for You. Sometimes people stay away from God out of shame or fear that He will be disappointed. But the seeker in Luke 15 runs toward the lost, not away from them. God’s pursuit of you is not a pursuit of condemnation. It is a pursuit of love.
Respond to Being Sought With Surrender. The sheep that is found yields to being carried. The son that is sought runs toward the father. Being sought after calls for a response of surrender and return, not continued hiding or self-sufficiency.
Carry This Identity Into Your Relationships. People who know they are sought after by God are freed from desperate people-pleasing. You do not need to chase validation from others when you already know the most important pursuit in the universe is directed at you.
Extend the Seeking to Others. Because you know what it feels like to be sought after, you can go after people who feel deserted or invisible. The identity of being sought after naturally produces a posture of seeking others for God’s sake.
Declare It
I am not abandoned or forgotten; I am the one God calls sought after and not forsaken.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for pursuing me even when I have wandered, hidden, or felt unworthy of being found. Help me to fully receive the truth that I am sought after by You. Where I have been living as though I am unwanted or overlooked, speak Your name over me: Sought After. Let that identity change how I see myself and how I pursue others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
