The Power of Forgiveness to Break Bondage

John 20:23

“If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Authority

You have the power to release forgiveness that breaks the bondage of sin and removes the enemy’s footholds of accusation in relationships and in your own life. When you forgive, you do not excuse what happened. You remove the legal ground the enemy has been standing on.

The Enemy’s Strategy

Satan uses unforgiveness as one of his most reliable and long-lasting footholds. He provokes offenses, amplifies wounds, and then stands in the gap of unforgiveness as a legal right to operate in that relationship and in your life. He knows that as long as forgiveness is withheld, the door remains open.

The Biblical Example

Jesus spoke John 20:23 to His disciples after His resurrection, breathing on them and telling them to receive the Holy Spirit. He then said if they forgave anyone’s sins, they were forgiven, and if they retained them, they were retained. This was a declaration of authority tied directly to the act of forgiveness. Forgiveness was not just a personal transaction. Jesus was connecting it to spiritual authority and showing that the act of releasing others had real power in the spiritual realm.

How to Use It

Identify every person and every offense toward which you are holding unforgiveness. Release each one deliberately and out loud in prayer. Name the person, name the offense, and speak the words of forgiveness. Then declare that his foothold in those relationships and in your heart is gone. Do not wait to feel like forgiving. Do it as an act of obedience and let the feeling follow.

“I release forgiveness and every bondage connected to unforgiveness is broken. I declare that his foothold in those relationships and in my heart is gone. I am free from the bondage of bitterness and every chain that unforgiveness carried is broken right now.”
