Single red rose on white - I Am Loved

I Am Loved (1 John 3:1)

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

1 John 3:1 (NIV)

What It Means to Be Loved

Being loved means you are deeply valued, chosen, and cared for by God. It means your worth is not something you have to earn, prove, perform for, or chase.

God’s love is not fragile, shallow, or temporary. It does not disappear when you struggle, fall short, feel weak, or go through hard seasons. To be loved by God means your identity is rooted in His heart toward you, not in people’s opinions, your past mistakes, or your current emotions.

Hebrew Meaning

ahav / ahavah (אָהַב / אַהֲבָה): to love / love; used to describe affection, desire, care, and covenant commitment. It carries the idea that love is more than emotion; it is faithful attachment expressed through action, loyalty, and delight.

Greek Meaning

agapē / agapaō (ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω): love / to love; used to describe self-giving, devoted love that acts for the good of another. It is not love based on convenience, emotion, or performance, but love rooted in God’s character and revealed through His actions.

Bible Verses on Being Loved

Deuteronomy 7:8 (NIV): “But it was because the LORD loved (ahav) you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”

Jeremiah 31:3 (NIV): “The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved (ahav) you with an everlasting love (ahavah); I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.'”

Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV): “The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love (ahavah) he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

John 3:16 (NIV): “For God so loved (agapaō) the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Romans 5:8 (NIV): “But God demonstrates his own love (agapē) for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

1 John 3:1 (NIV): “See what great love (agapē) the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

How to Practice Being Loved

Stop Measuring Your Worth by Performance. Your value does not rise and fall with productivity, approval, success, or failure. Practice receiving God’s love before trying to prove yourself.

Pay Attention to the Lies You Believe. When you feel unwanted, rejected, or not enough, pause and ask, “Is this what God says about me, or is this what pain taught me?”

Let God’s Love Shape How You Treat Yourself. Do not speak to yourself in ways God never would. Correction can be honest without becoming cruel.

Receive Love Without Suspicion. Sometimes love feels uncomfortable when you are used to earning acceptance. Let healthy love teach your heart that care does not always come with conditions.

Reflect God’s Love to Others. Being loved by God gives you the security to love people without using them for validation. Love from fullness, not emptiness.

Declare It

I am fully loved by God not because of what I have done, but because of who He is.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for loving me with a love I did not earn and cannot lose. Help me to receive Your love deeply, not just know it in my mind. Heal the places in me that still feel unwanted, unworthy, or forgotten. Teach me to live from the truth that I am Your child, fully seen and fully loved. Let Your love shape the way I see myself and the way I treat others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question

What part of me still struggles to believe I am fully loved by God, and how has that unbelief affected the way I see myself, receive love, or relate to others?
