I Am Free (John 8:36)
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
John 8:36 (NIV)
What It Means to Be Free
Being free means you are no longer ruled by what once controlled, condemned, or enslaved you. It means Jesus gives you the power to live from truth instead of bondage.
Freedom is not doing whatever you feel like doing. True freedom is being released from sin, fear, shame, and destructive patterns so you can live the life God created you to live. A free person is not perfect, but they are no longer powerless.
Hebrew Meaning
deror (דְּרוֹר): liberty, release, or freedom; used to describe release from bondage and restoration of what was lost. It carries the idea of being allowed to return, recover, and live no longer trapped under oppression.
Greek Meaning
eleutheroō / eleutheros / eleutheria (ἐλευθερόω / ἐλεύθερος / ἐλευθερία): to set free / free / freedom; used to describe liberation from slavery, sin, and fear. It is not shallow independence, but the deep freedom Christ gives to live under grace and truth.
Bible Verses on Freedom
Leviticus 25:10 (NIV): “Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty (deror) throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you.”
Isaiah 61:1 (NIV): “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom (deror) for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”
Jeremiah 34:15 (NIV): “Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom (deror) to your own people.”
John 8:36 (NIV): “So if the Son sets you free (eleutheroō), you will be free (eleutheros) indeed.”
2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV): “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (eleutheria).”
Galatians 5:1 (NIV): “It is for freedom (eleutheria) that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
How to Practice Freedom
Name What Has Been Controlling You. Freedom starts with honesty. Identify the habit, fear, relationship, thought pattern, or shame that has been making decisions for you.
Stop Calling Bondage Comfort. Sometimes what feels familiar is not healthy. Ask God to show you where you have normalized something He wants to free you from.
Replace Old Patterns With Truth. Freedom is not just leaving something behind; it is learning a new way to live. Build habits that agree with who God says you are.
Stand Firm When Old Chains Call Back. Freedom will be tested. When old patterns try to pull you back, remember that temptation is not your master.
Use Freedom to Love and Obey God. True freedom does not make you careless. It gives you the ability to choose what is life-giving, holy, and wise.
Declare It
I walk in freedom today because what once controlled me no longer has authority over who I am becoming.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for setting me free through Jesus. Help me recognize anything that is still trying to control, trap, or define me. Teach me to walk in freedom with wisdom, obedience, and courage. Give me strength to stand firm when old patterns try to return. Let my life reflect the freedom of someone who belongs to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Question
What have I been calling “normal” or “comfortable” that may actually be keeping me from the freedom Christ has already given me?
