I Am Rooted and Built Up (Colossians 2:7)

What It Means to Be Rooted and Built Up
Paul uses two images here that work together: a tree and a building. A tree needs deep roots to withstand storms and produce fruit. A building needs a solid foundation and walls that rise one course at a time. Both images describe the same spiritual reality: a life that is growing downward into Christ through faith and upward through consistent spiritual formation. Rooted and built up are both happening at once.
To be rooted in Christ means your source of nourishment, stability, and identity comes from your connection to Him. When the winds come, you do not fall because your roots go deep. To be built up in Christ means you are not static. You are being added to, strengthened, and developed in faith over time. This is not a passive process. It happens through engagement with God’s Word, through community, through suffering, and through the daily decisions to trust what you know rather than drift from it. A person who is rooted and built up overflows with thankfulness because they can see how far the growth has come.
Hebrew Meaning
sheresh (שֹׁרֶשׁ): root, source, foundation; used in the Old Testament to describe the foundation of a tree or, metaphorically, the source from which something grows or the depth from which it draws life. Job 19:28 and Isaiah 11:10 both use root imagery to describe the origin of strength and identity. To be rooted in God is to draw your life from a source that does not dry up or shift.
Greek Meaning
rhizoo (ῥιζόω): to cause to take root, to become firmly rooted; used in Colossians 2:7 and Ephesians 3:17 to describe what happens when Christ becomes the foundation of a life. The passive form suggests this is something that happens to you through your connection to Christ rather than something you produce on your own. You abide, and the rooting happens. You remain, and the building goes up. The growth is real, but the source is entirely Him.

How to Practice Being Rooted and Built Up
Stay in the Word Daily. Roots grow through sustained contact with a source of nourishment. Regular engagement with Scripture is not a religious obligation. It is how your roots go deeper into Christ. Consistency matters more than length.
Stay in Community. Paul wrote Colossians 2:7 to a church. Building up happens in relationship. You are not designed to grow in isolation. Honest, accountable, Scripture-rooted community accelerates the building.
Do Not Uproot Yourself in Hard Seasons. Trees that survive storms are the ones with deep roots. The temptation to disengage from God during difficult seasons is real, but that is precisely the wrong time to pull away. The storm is where roots are tested and deepened.
Notice and Name Your Growth. Colossians 2:7 ends with overflowing thankfulness. Part of what produces that thankfulness is noticing how far you have come. Regularly reflect on how your faith, character, and trust in God have developed over time.
Keep Building, Even When Growth Feels Slow. Buildings go up one course at a time. There are seasons in the Christian life that feel like very little is happening. Trust that the foundation is being reinforced even when you cannot see the walls rising.

My life is rooted in Christ, and every day I am being built up and strengthened in faith.

Lord, thank You for the life You are growing in me. Drive my roots deeper into You through Your Word, prayer, and community. Keep building what You have started. In the seasons when growth feels slow or the storms are testing everything, let my roots hold because they are in You and not in circumstances. Let thankfulness overflow as I see how far You have brought me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
