The Power to Make the Enemy Flee

James 4:7

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Authority

God has given you the power to make the enemy run. It is not a suggestion or a possibility. It is a promise. When you are submitted to God and you resist the devil directly, he has no choice but to flee. That means the enemy does not get to stay where he is not wanted. You have the right to tell him to leave, and when you do it from a place of surrender to God, he goes.

The Enemy’s Strategy

Satan is a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8), and his strategy is to make himself seem bigger than he actually is. He counts on you staying passive. He knows that if you never resist him, he never has to flee. So he keeps the pressure on, waiting for you to wear down, give up, or assume nothing can be done. The moment you start resisting, his bluff is called.

The Biblical Example

James was writing to believers who were being pulled in multiple directions by temptation, conflict, and worldly pressure. His instruction was not complicated: get aligned with God and push back against the devil. The promise attached to that resistance is that the devil will flee. The word flee means to withdraw or escape. James was not describing a slow retreat; he was describing the enemy departing. The condition was not spiritual perfection but active submission to God paired with direct resistance.

How to Use It

Resistance is not passive. It is an active, verbal, deliberate act. When fear comes, resist it out loud. When temptation comes, resist it by declaring what God says. When the enemy pushes, push back with the Word of God. Submit yourself to God first by acknowledging that He is your strength, then open your mouth and command the enemy to flee.

“I submit myself to God. I resist you, devil, and you must flee from me right now. I am not your target, your victim, or your territory. I belong to God, and by the authority He has given me, you are commanded to go in the name of Jesus.”
