Open hands - I Am Accepted

I Am Accepted (Romans 15:7)

“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”

Romans 15:7 (NIV)

What It Means to Be Accepted

Being accepted means Christ has received you fully, not conditionally. It means your belonging is not earned by good behavior or revoked by failure.

Rejection is one of the deepest wounds a person can carry. When acceptance has always felt conditional, it is hard to believe God receives you without strings attached. But Christ’s acceptance is not a reward for spiritual performance. He received you while you were still unfinished, and that welcome does not change based on how well you are doing. A person who lives accepted stops striving to earn what has already been freely given.

Hebrew Meaning

ratsah (רָצָה): to be pleased with, accept, or take delight in; used to describe God’s favorable reception of a person or offering. It carries the idea of being genuinely welcomed, not merely tolerated.

Greek Meaning

proslambanō (προσλαμβάνω): to take to oneself, receive, or accept; used in Romans 15:7 to describe Christ’s active, personal reception of believers. It points to an intentional welcome, not a passive acknowledgment.

dektos (δεκτός): acceptable or welcome; used to describe those who are received with favor. It reminds us that God’s acceptance is not reluctant but genuine.

Bible Verses on Being Accepted

Psalm 149:4 (NIV): “For the LORD takes delight (ratsah) in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.”

Isaiah 56:7 (NIV): “These I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted (ratsah) on my altar.”

Luke 4:24 (NIV): “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted (dektos) in his hometown.”

Acts 10:35 (NIV): “But accepts (dektos) from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.”

Romans 15:7 (NIV): “Accept (proslambanō) one another, then, just as Christ accepted (proslambanō) you, in order to bring praise to God.”

Ephesians 1:6 (NIV): “To the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.”

How to Practice Being Accepted

Stop Trying to Earn What You Already Have. Acceptance in Christ is not on the other side of improvement. You are already received. Let that truth settle before you strive.

Recognize When You Are Performing for Approval. Notice when you are editing yourself, shrinking, or overreaching to be liked. Ask whether you are living from acceptance or chasing it.

Let Christ’s Reception Heal Rejection’s Wounds. Past rejection by people can distort how you see God. Bring those wounds to Him and let His welcome begin to rewrite what rejection taught you.

Extend Acceptance to Others. When you are secure in being received by Christ, you can receive others without needing them to perform for you either.

Return to the Gospel When You Feel Unwelcome. When insecurity rises, go back to the truth: Christ accepted you. That has not changed.

Declare It

I belong here because Christ accepted me, not because I earned my place or performed well enough to deserve it.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for accepting me in Christ without requiring me to earn it. Help me stop performing for approval and teach me to live from the security of already being received by You. Heal the places where rejection has made acceptance feel impossible. Let Your welcome become the voice I trust most. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question

Where am I still trying to earn acceptance that God has already freely given, and how has the fear of rejection been shaping the way I live, speak, or relate to others?
