I Am God’s Temple (1 Corinthians 6:19)
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.”
1 Corinthians 6:19 (ESV)
What It Means to Be God’s Temple
In the Old Testament, the temple was the place where God’s presence dwelled among His people. It was sacred, set apart, and tended with great care. Paul’s declaration in 1 Corinthians 6 is stunning: that place is now you. The Holy Spirit has made your body His home. You are not just a person God made. You are a person God inhabits.
This changes how you see yourself. Your body, your mind, and your daily life are not neutral territory. They are sacred space. When you understand that the Spirit of God lives within you, you begin to make decisions differently. You steward your health, your thoughts, your habits, and your relationships with a new sense of dignity. Caring for yourself is an act of honoring God.
Hebrew Meaning
mishkan (מִשְׁכָּן): tabernacle or dwelling place; used in the Old Testament to describe the portable sanctuary where God’s presence resided among Israel. The root word means “to dwell.” God has always desired to dwell among His people, and in the New Covenant, that dwelling became personal, residing within each believer through the Holy Spirit.
Greek Meaning
naos (ναός): temple, sanctuary, the inner holy place; used in 1 Corinthians 6:19 to describe the believer’s body as the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Paul deliberately uses naos, the word for the inner sanctuary, rather than the broader temple complex, to make the point that God’s presence is not distant or ceremonial. It is immediate and intimate.
Bible Verses on Being God’s Temple
1 Corinthians 3:16 (ESV): “Do you not know that you are God’s temple (naos) and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
2 Corinthians 6:16 (ESV): “For we are the temple (naos) of the living God; as God said, ‘I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.'”
Psalm 139:14 (ESV): “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
Romans 12:1 (ESV): “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
Ephesians 2:22 (ESV): “In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place (katoiketerion) for God by the Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 6:20 (ESV): “For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
How to Practice Being God’s Temple
Honor Your Body as Sacred Space. Make choices about your physical health that reflect the dignity of the One who lives within you. Rest, nourishment, and care for your body are acts of stewardship.
Guard Your Mind and What Enters It. The temple was not open to everything. Be intentional about what you allow into your thoughts through media, relationships, and conversation. What you consistently let in shapes the atmosphere of your inner life.
Invite the Holy Spirit Into Your Decisions. Before making significant choices, take a moment to acknowledge that God is present with you. Ask for His wisdom and listen before you act.
Treat Your Emotions as Spiritual Signals. Your inner life matters to God. Anxiety, joy, grief, and conviction are not just psychological experiences. They are part of how the Spirit speaks and works within you. Pay attention.
Live With a Sense of the Sacred in the Ordinary. The temple made everyday moments holy. You carry the presence of God into every room, every conversation, and every decision. That is a remarkable truth. Live as someone who knows it.
Declare It
I honor God in how I care for myself because His Spirit lives within me.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your Spirit chose to make a home in me. Help me to live in a way that honors that reality. Teach me to care for my body, guard my mind, and steward my life with the awareness that I carry Your presence. Where I have been careless or negligent, renew my sense of the sacred. Let my life be a dwelling place where Your Spirit is welcome and at home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
