The Power of Encouragement to Strengthen Those Under Attack

Intentional encouragement is a spiritual act that strengthens the people around you who are under attack and directly counters the enemy’s strategy of isolation and discouragement. Your words, grounded in God’s truth, carry real weight in the battles others are fighting.

The Enemy’s Strategy

Satan uses discouragement, isolation, and the silence of community to weaken believers who are under attack. He knows that a person who feels alone in their battle is far more likely to give up than one who is surrounded by people speaking truth into their situation. He works to keep people from speaking up, reaching out, and building each other up so that the weight of the battle is heavier than it needs to be.

The Biblical Example

Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians 5:11 to a community of believers who were already doing this and told them to keep doing it. The word encourage comes from the Greek word parakaleo, which means to call alongside, to urge, to come near and speak to. It is the same root used for the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete, the one called alongside. Paul was saying that when believers encourage one another, they are functioning in a way that mirrors what the Holy Spirit does. Encouragement was not optional or supplementary. It was a core function of the community.

How to Use It

Make intentional encouragement a daily spiritual practice. Look for the people around you who are under attack and speak specific, targeted words of encouragement into their situation. Do not offer generic comfort. Speak to the specific battle they are in with the specific truth that directly counters what the enemy is saying to them.
