The Power of Forgiveness to Release and Be Released

Colossians 3:13

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Authority

Forgiving others as the Lord forgave you releases both them and you from the bondage that unforgiveness creates and removes the enemy’s access points in every affected relationship. Forgiveness is not a passive emotional process. It is a deliberate spiritual act with real authority behind it.

The Enemy’s Strategy

The enemy cultivates grievances. He amplifies offenses, keeps wounds fresh, and ensures that injustices are replayed often enough to make forgiveness feel impossible and inappropriate. He uses unforgiveness to bind both the offender and the offended in a web of spiritual bondage that he controls from the middle.

The Biblical Example

Paul wrote this instruction to the Colossians in the context of describing how to put on the new self. He linked forgiveness directly to the standard of how the Lord forgave. That standard is total and unconditional. It does not wait for the offending person to change, apologize, or improve. The Lord forgave while people were still in the wrong. Paul’s instruction was to use that same standard with each other. Bearing with one another and forgiving one another were placed together, indicating that forgiveness is not a one-time event but an ongoing posture in community.

How to Use It

Forgive every person who has wronged you with the same standard that God used when He forgave you: completely, without qualification, and without keeping a record. Name each person and each offense specifically and release them. The enemy loses his access the moment forgiveness is chosen and maintained.

Declaration

“I forgive as the Lord forgave me. I release every person and every offense fully. I do not keep a record of wrongs and I do not let the enemy maintain access to my relationships through unforgiveness. I am released and I release others. The bondage the enemy built on my unforgiveness is broken. I walk in the freedom that forgiveness produces.”
