The Power of God’s Word to Drive the Enemy Away

Matthew 4:10

“Then Jesus said to him, Be gone, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.”

Authority

Jesus drove Satan away with the written Word of God. That same Word lives in you through Scripture and through the Holy Spirit. When you speak the Word directly against the enemy, you wield the same weapon Jesus used and the enemy must respond to it the same way he responded to Jesus.

The Enemy’s Strategy

Satan is the Tempter (Matthew 4:3) who challenges the Word of God directly. His strategy in the wilderness was to question, twist, and misapply Scripture to get Jesus to act outside of God’s will. He uses the same strategy against believers, presenting distorted versions of truth to make disobedience seem reasonable and justified.

The Biblical Example

Matthew 4 records Jesus in the wilderness being tempted by the devil three times. Each time the enemy came, Jesus responded with written scripture. On the third temptation, Jesus used Deuteronomy 6:13 and commanded the devil directly: go away, Satan. The devil left. Jesus did not debate, reason, or negotiate. He used the Word of God as the weapon and issued a direct command. The enemy had no response to the word of God spoken with authority.

How to Use It

When the enemy is pressing you through temptation, accusation, or deception, find the specific Scripture that addresses what he is bringing and speak it out loud directly at him. Do not just think the verse. Speak it. When Jesus said Be gone, it was connected directly to It is written. The declaration and the Scripture work together.

“Be gone, Satan. It is written that I shall worship the Lord my God and serve Him only. I stand on the written Word of God and that Word is my weapon against every temptation, every lie, and every strategy you bring. I speak the Word and you must leave. The authority of Scripture is in my mouth and you have no answer for it. Go, in the name of Jesus.”
